I was busying myself on a project some time ago when I suddenly noticed my favorite smell wafting through…it smelled like rain! I put down my tools and went straight to the door. As I stepped out onto the hot sidewalk I saw a raindrop hit the ground right in front of me. It quickly sizzled and disappeared. I saw others do the same, one after the other, hit the ground and evaporate almost before they could be noticed. But eventually, they began to accumulate until the ground was wet. And before I knew it, the ditches were full of water, the trees were glistening with droplets, and our beautiful desert was drinking up its lovely life-giving gift.
I thought about those few drops of rain that fell first and that didn’t seem to contribute to the magnificent storm I had been able to enjoy. I realized that it takes every single drop to construct a rainstorm—those that fall first, those that fall last, and those that fall in between. Without them all, there would not have been rain.
It also made me curious, as does almost everything, so I looked it up. On average a raindrop falls about 2,500 feet, at 14 miles per hour, and takes about 2 minutes to hit the ground. That’s a lot for a little raindrop! But when many raindrops fall together the world around them is rewarded with a much-needed drink for our always thirsty plants, the pleasant aroma of wet dirt, perhaps some lofty yet fleeting waterfalls, and possibly, if we’re lucky, a translucent ribbon of color draped across the sky.
We all have the potential to be like these wonderful desert storms and bless the world with our kind deeds. Each time we make good choices, help and serve each other, smile at one another, share our hearts, and follow Jesus’ example, those simple actions become raindrops of goodness that shower happiness on the world around us and make it a better place.
I hope we can all remember that Jesus gave His life for us so that we can be happy in this life. We all make mistakes, and while those mistakes bring sadness and regret into our lives, we don’t have to continue to feel bad about them forever. When we truly repent those feelings can be washed away and replaced with love and peace. Jesus wants us to be happy and He wants us to share our happiness with those around us to remind them that He loves them also.
Let’s all think of some ways we can shower happiness in our world and share Jesus’ love with everyone we meet.
Love you ALL!
