Jesus Once of Humble Birth - Hymn 196

Sister Sheri Peterson

Ward Music Director

A paradox is a seeming contradiction - an apparent impossibility or lack of logic - that turns out to be harmonious when it is understood more fully. Christ's teachings are full of paradox; for example, Matthew 23:11 "He that is greatest among you shall be your servant" is just one example. This hymn is a triumphant meditation on the paradoxes of the Savior's life and ministry.

By setting up a repeated "Once..., Now..." sequence, Elder Parley P. Pratt structured a series of poetic contrasts. The words of this hymn allow us to dwell upon and revel in these contrasts. What joy this meditation brings to our hearts! Whatever his struggle, whatever his trials, Jesus triumphed over all in the fulfillment of his mission.
