Service

During His ministry on the earth, Jesus Christ spent His time serving and helping others. True disciples of Jesus Christ do likewise. The Savior said, “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:35). Since 2010, we have had the honor of being home to one of Ironman Triathlon’s signature destinations. Some initial and obvious reasons for our location being so popular are the spectacular views along our course landscape with athletes swimming at Sand Hollow State Park, cycling through Snow Canyon State Park and enjoying the overall beauty that is Southern Utah. One of the reasons Ironman has continued their connection with Southern Utah is the friendly atmosphere and unparalleled service that they receive while they are here. This past week the world was watching Southern Utah once again as we welcomed, hosted, and served the Ironman Triathlon community for their 70.3 World Championship event. Athletes from around the world arrived with their families, friends, and supporters to compete, spectate and enjoy the hospitality of Southern Utahns. We did not disappoint. For 3,500 competing athletes, our community registered over 3,000 volunteers. These volunteers serve to make each athlete feel welcome and have a memorable experience. They serve to keep the athletes safe as lifeguards, security checkers, course direction pointers, food and water support, and many other jobs. The volunteer captains prepare for months to have things in place for race day. I have personally competed in this race multiple times and felt accomplished as countless hours of training carried me to the finish line. That accomplishment, however, is secondary in my Ironman experiences. Whenever I reflect on our 12 years of Ironman, my first memories are always those of another’s gratitude for our service. These athletes are genuinely impressed with the attentiveness, politeness, and neighborliness of each of you as you interact with and serve them. We may not all have had a direct impact on these specific events this week, but I know we each contribute to the spirit that is felt when people from around the world come to visit. That feeling that visitors leave with is a direct result of the teachings of the gospel of Jesus Christ and our commitment to be a service-oriented church. That feeling inspires many to question what makes Southern Utah special and guides them to find the answer. We never know the magnitude of our positive influence.  Opportunities to serve are limitless. Whether it be during an organized event like Ironman, or through programs like Helping Hands and JustServe, or simply a kind word or deed to a friend or neighbor, we can exhibit the Christlike attribute of service. The Lord said, “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me” (Matthew 25:40). Thank you for all you do. We love you. The Washington Utah Stake Presidency President Joel Beckstrand

Stake Presidency Second Counselor.
