The Importance of the Book of Mormon

Dear Brother and Sisters:

This past week, I had the opportunity to fly to Tampa, Florida for a business trip. While seating in the airplane, the flight attendant began a demonstration of the safety features of the aircraft. The flight attendants point out how the seat belt work and points out the emergency exits among many other features. Every time I see this demonstration, I am reminded of an old church movie that shows a missionary coming home from his mission, and he is seating in an airplane watching this same demonstration. In the movie, the missionary tells the passenger next to him that, during his mission, he felt very much like the flight attendant in that flight. The flight attendant had a very important message that, if needed, could save people’s lives, and yet very few people in the plane paid attention to her.

In this my latest experience however, the flight attendant did the demonstration is a very quick way with little sense of urgency. She was not as careful in demonstrating how the seat belt work. In fact, she simply held it up. Quickly pointed to the exits and hurried to seat down as the plane was taking off. No one in the plane was going to complain on how she presented that important message, especially, since most people did not pay attention to her-as it was expected. Which was probably the reason why she did not care to carefully review that information. She was brief and casual in the presentation.

Was the message from the flight attendant any less important because her audience did not pay attention? No, that is not the case. Perhaps, she was not as careful because she knew few were paying attention, or she was in hurry to get the flight off the ground. Either way, the importance of her message is not diminished by the circumstances around.

Dear brothers and sisters, we have been given a book of instructions with life eternal truths. The Book of Mormon contains information that world needs so desperately-but most are not willing to listen. The fact that people are not willing to listen, does not make its message any less true or needed-much like the flight attendant’s message. We have this message and must not treat it lightly or becoming complacent in teaching it - whether it is to our families or others. We must be tenacious in our love for the Book of Mormon. We must make it an essential tool in our homes if we are going to joyfully endure what is in front of us. The teachings in the Book of Mormon have the power to transform us, and to enable our families to live a more complete and joyful life. In this week’s come follow me lesson, the question was asked: “If you were offered diamonds or rubies or the Book of Mormon, which would you choose? Honestly, which is of greater worth to you?” This is a very thought-provoking question. Riches of this world can provide instant gratification, but only the true gospel of Jesus Christ can bring peace in this life and the promise of Eternal Life in our next journey. The Book of Mormon is our safety in a troublesome world. Everyone one of us encounters times in our life when we could be rescued, and the principles found in the Book of Mormon can help us apply eternal lenses to our temporary challenges. They will still be difficult, but we will be able to endure with a better perspective.

Brothers and Sisters strive to make the study of the Book of Mormon a daily habit in your life and in your families’ lives. If you do make this a habit, in case of emergency, despair, sickness, stress, deep pain, or any other of life’s challenges, the Book of Mormon will be a guide and comfort to you and your family. “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Prov. 3:4-5. We love you Brothers and Sisters! Washington Utah Stake Presidency President Emerson Carnavale
